 Unification Chapter 26 - The Mike Gatting Tour SACU erred badly in 1990 by going ahead with the Gatting Tour to South Africa. The pace of political change occurred with such rapidity that they (SACU) were caught flat-footed when the NSC flexed its muscles and declared that it would stop the Gatting Tour in its tracks. Bacher tried to persuade the SAP to allow the NSC to demonstrate against the Gatting Tour, but to no avail. The SAP brutality ignited anger among the anti-tour demonstrators and shocked cricket organisers. Barely two days after Kimberley police dispersed an anti-tour gathering at Manguang Township near Bloemfontein. Gatting’s insensitive and arrogant remark that the protesters were “a small group of people who were singing and dancing” also incensed the explosive situation further. >>Back to the Top<<
