St George's Park - Chapter 27 - Thabo Mbeki the Mediator
Mediator Thabo Mbeki, proposed that the tour be curtailed to four one-day matches where no protests would take place. It was also agreed that no matches would be played at Cape Town and Port Elizabeth where the anti-tour opposition was very strong.
Further negotiations between the NSC and SACU culminated in Bacher’s statement on February 13, 1990 in which SACU acknowledged that it was time to compromise and that the event had been overrun by the politics of the day. It also confirmed that the tour was divisive and had split the communities. It further cancelled the second leg of the tour which would have taken place early in the 1990-91 season.
